There are two ways this can work. One is to hold a funny video contest as an event. Make participation in the contest open to anyone. Charge an entry fee for participants. Make the entry fee reasonable, like $5 or $10. Show the videos at an event in your gym and charge admission to the event. Raise additional funds by selling food and drinks at the event. Add some additional excitement by making the event like a movie premier night.

Another way to use the same fundraising idea is to set up a website and show the entries online. Online voting determines the winners. The winners could receive prizes sponsored by local businesses. Get a local camera store to sponsor the website in return for advertising on the site. An entry fee can still be charged by adding an online form of payment on the website. Ask voters to make a voluntary contribution with each vote.

The advantage of a website is that the contest can be promoted beyond your own community. The disadvantage of the website is that it may not attract the same participation as an event. You know your community best and will likely have a good idea of which format will work for your school.
